Chelsea set to launch bid for Tottenham target Jules Kounde

Chelsea is planning a move for Tottenham Hotspur target Jules Kounde.

Chelsea is preparing an initial bid for Sevilla defender Jules Kounde, according to Eldesmarque (h/t The Sun), in order to beat Tottenham Hotspur to his signature.

Kounde, 22, has been with Sevilla since January 2019, after joining his boyhood club, Bordeaux. The center-back has swiftly established himself as one of La Liga's best, having led Los Nervionenses to back-to-back top-four finishes in the league as well as a UEFA Europa League title in 2019/20.

Kounde has also broken into the French national squad as a result of his excellent play, and he is generating significant interest from a number of major teams around Europe. Manchester City has already had a £47 million bid for the center-back rejected, while Tottenham and Real Madrid are also thought to be interested.

Chelsea is now trying to beat Tottenham and the rest of the competition to sign Kounde, according to the report. In order to do so, the Blues are preparing an offer for the 22-year-old.

Chelsea could surely benefit from adding to their central defensive options this summer.

Thiago Silva will turn 37 in a few months, while Fikayo Tomori has made his move to AC Milan permanent. Cesar Azpilicueta, who is also in his thirties, will need his playing time to be carefully monitored in the future.

Chelsea would be wise to recruit another defender like Kounde, especially with Kurt Zouma slated to leave the club this summer.

A relocation for Kounde, on the other hand, will not be inexpensive. As previously stated, Man City's £47 million deal has been rejected, with Sevilla asking for a £69 million transfer fee for their prized asset. It remains to be seen whether Chelsea is willing to meet that sum or try to negotiate a cheaper price.
